Lion Music Special

Lion Music is a label in Finland that specialises in instrumental guitar, progressive rock, and metal. They've been kind enough to supply me with many CDs since I started doing the show, so I've decided to repay them by dedicating an entire show to their releases.

Check back here over the next few days for updates. I'll keep adding to this list till right before the show.

Cyril Achard - The Spirit Lives On - The Music of Jimi Hendrix Revisited Vol 1

The great French guitarist Cyril Achard plays an amazing Highway Chile for the Hendrix tribute CD.

Faraz Anwar - Abstract Point of View

Another brilliant release for Lion. Faraz's CD is one of the most satisfying and rewarding I've heard in a long time. It's delightful. Here's a long track, Through the Passage of Time.

Baltimoore - Ultimate Tribute

This band, featuring Björn Lodin on vocals and Thomas Larson on guitar, is more heavy rock than a lot of stuff I play. This album contains covers of rock songs from a couple of decades ago.

The one I'm going to play for you, Love Child, is a Deep Purple track from the album Come Taste the Band, and originally featured Tommy Bolin on guitar.

George Bellas - Venomous Fingers

So you like your neo-classical? Try some of this: Shedding Skin, Lightspeed and Adrenalin Rush. Well, what do you think now? Impressive!

Patrik Carlsson - Phraseology

Wow. Swedish guitarist Patrik Carlsson will make you weep. Yes, I know you can play, but.. listen to this guy... I'll play Jimi's Tribute and Cartoon Hippie for you, and you can just buy the CD to hear the rest.

Patrik Carlsson - Shawn Lane Remembered - Vol 1

Here's Patrik's contribution to the Shawn Lane tribute CD, T-Zone Rhythm.

Marcel Coenen - Guitar Talk

Marcel was the winner of the Dutch National Guitar "Best Rock Guitarist" contest in 1998. Independence Day shows why.

This CD also comes with a VCD of Marcel performing all the songs on the CD.

Marcel Coenen - Shawn Lane Remembered - Vol 1

Here's Marcel's contribution to the Shawn lane tribute CD, Delusion.

Rusty Cooley - Rusty Cooley

He's fast, but that doesn't mean he's not tasty. Did I mention that he was fast? Here's The Duel and The Butcher for your enjoyment. Try and keep up.

Rusty Cooley - Warmth in the Wilderness - A Tribute to Jason Becker Vol 2

I told you he was tasty. Here's Peace of Mind part 1.

Double Heart Project - Shawn Lane Remembered - Vol 2

Awesome French duo of Vicnent Fabre and Franck Ribiere. Their contribution to the Shawn Lane Tribute CD is a cover of Hardcase.

Bob Katsionis - Imaginary Force

Bob's one of those talented guys. You know the ones I mean. He plays all keys and guitar on this CD, and play them he does... Here's his The Trilogy of Lust... err... trilogy... St. Pervert, Tsifteteli and Ouzo!.

Richie Kotzen - Slow

Richie is a great player, but I don't really dig this album. I'm sure that a lot of his fans will enjoy hearing I Can Make You Happy, so here ya go.

Tony MacAlpine - Violent Machine

I had the pleasure of meeting Tony recently, during his tour with Steve Vai. What a nice guy, and what an incredible musician. This CD is actually a re-release. Thank Lion Music for keeping this music alive! Here's a couple of tracks: ARS Nova and Violent Machine.

Tony MacAlpine - Live Insanity

Tony's one of the best musicians you'll ever hear, a virtuoso on both guitar and piano and great composition skills. This live CD is brain-meltingly good. Hope you enjoy Rusalka.

Alex Masi - In the Name of Mozart

This is Alex's homage to Mozart. I'm sure you'll recognise and enjoy Allegro C maj K. 545. Alex is so talented. Check out MCM, below.

Mattsson - Power Games

Lars Eric Mattsson has released a ton of CDs with Lion Music. It's hard to choose, so instead, what I've decided to do is play a 17-minute long track, Beyond the Horizon - Guitar Concerto no. 1.

MCM - Ritual Factory

MCM is Alex Masi on guitar, Rancy Coven on bass and John Macaluso on drums. Really, however, the band is more than that; listing its ingredients and asking you to appreciate the result is like saying that your favourite dessert is egg, butter, suger, cinnamon and cocoa...

This is a stellar release for Lion Music. I'll play a few tracks for you, including: Ray-Gun, Ghost in My House and Dead Monkey Road.

Mister Kite - Box of Fear

This is an unusual release for Lion, I think. Verging on nu-metal (well, not quite, but compared to other 80's-style Lion releases...), with a distinctive American sound, Mister Kite is a Swedish band that has obviously looked beyond Europe for inspiration. How Long is a great track, but the whole album is well worth listening to.

Ohm: - Ohm:

Chris Poland's band Ohm: released one of the best albums of recent years with their eponymous debut. Eponymous? It means self-titled, named after itself.

I've played a few cuts off this CD on previous shows, including this one: Peanut Buddah. It's a crowd pleaser, and I know you'll enjoy hearing it again.

Ohm: - "Live" on KPFK 90.7 FM

Ohm: played an incredible live set on KPFK radio in Los Angeles. Listen to these three tracks, and marvel. Here's Icarus Falls, You Don't Know and Iguana.

Jon Paget - Shawn Lane Remembered - Vol 2

The late Shawn Lane inspired many people. Jon plays an inspired Song for Shawn.

Chris Poland - Return to Metalopolis 2002

This is a Lion re-release of Chris' 1990 album, remixed, remastered, and with a couple of new tracks. I'll play one of the new ones, The Heavy Guitar Jam, but don't fee like you're being ripped off only getting one track, it's nearly a quarter of an hour long.

Tony Smotherman - Shawn Lane Remembered - Vol 1

Tony, along with Rob Scavetti on keys, contributes the beautiful Moonlane Sonata (Intro) to the Shawn Lane tribute CD.

Sun Caged - The Spirit Lives On - The Music of Jimi Hendrix Revisited Vol 1

This track, Freedom, features Marcel Coenen on guitar.

Taboo Voodoo - Something's Cookin'

Another 'supergroup', with the great Cyril Achard on guitar, Mike Terrana on drums and Ivan Rougny on bass. You're definitely going to enjoy Print of Time and One for the Road.
