Bob Brozman Interview!

Bob Brozman is a prolific recorder, passionate performer, outspoken and intimidatingly talented. He plays guitar and guitar-like instruments, such as the charango, although he is known for his work with the National Resonator.

His musical expertise encompasses elements of blues, jazz, Gypsy swing, calypso, sega, even hip-hop and ska, as well as Hawaiian, Indian, African, Japanese/Okinawan, Caribbean and American roots blues.

An adjunct Professor at the Macquarie University in Sydney, Bob has studied the music of many "colonised" and "un-colonised" cultures. His own music is influenced by his travels to the third world.

His live performances are full of physical energy and edgy humour, as well as great music, and are not to be missed. Tune in to Fret Net this Sunday morning to hear Bob speak about his musical adventures.

Check back here over the next few days for updates. I'll keep adding to this list till right before the show.

The Atlantics - Point Zero
Very cool Australian surf band. Sandbar Blues is a good one.

Jeff Beck - Live at BB King Blues Club
Can't ever go wrong with a bit of Jeff Beck. Here's a live version of Scatterbrain.

Bob Brozman - Interview recorded at PBS 15th March 2004
Bob talks, and talks, and plays a couple of songs live in the studio! :) It's good. I'll play a few tracks from his CDs as well. Dead Cat On The Line from Blues Reflex, East from Metric Time and Afrikanische Oom Pa Pa from Live Now.

Martin Campbell - My Reward
It's Jazz. That's Jazz with a capital 'J'. And Martin's Australian. Buy his CD. Piccolo Odyssey is brief, but good.

Marcel Coenen - Guitartalk
Marcel is a fiercely talented player, and winner of a Dutch National Guitar competition. This CD comes with a bonus VCD of Marcel performing all the tracks off the CD, and it's humbling to watch. Any track would have done to demonstrate his talents, so here's an almost randomly chosen one, Shoreline.

Confusion - Enter Alone
Incredible progressive band from Greece. Cacophony Blues is cool.

Rusty Cooley - Rusty Cooley
Rusty is one of those players that makes you wonder how he does it, and then he does it again. Here's Hillbilly Milita.

Curtis - Room 137
A favourite around here. Danger Girl 2001 is a good one, but then again, they all are.

Deluc - 8th Wonder
Fred Leduc's first album, brilliant! I've chosen 2 + 2 = 5 this time. Support Australian artists!

Deluc - Missing Motions
Fred Leduc's most recent album is different to his first. Another Attempt is nice. Support Australian artists!

Double Heart Project - Human Nature's Fight
A couple of extremely talented guys from France. The CD has a mix of styles on it, and some great guest players. I'll play the title track, Human Nature's Fight, for ya.

HP Crazy - Demo
HansPeter sent me this demo recently. I like it. When Conny Talks. Yep.

Penny Ikinger - Electra
Penny's an Australian singer/songwriter/mad guitar player. Kathleen is a good example.

In Vivo
Local band featuring the incredible (yet mostly restrained) James Lomas on guitar, and the mesmerising Fiona Lee Maynard on vocals. You must go see this band live. Fiona is the best female frontperson, ever. I'm gonna play you three tracks:

Forgive Me Please from In Vivo, Never Fall In Love from Scary and Feeds Me from Punks Like You Are A Dime A Dozen.

Bill Lonero - Slather
Another Fret Net favourite. Enjoy Mr. Grinch, then buy the CD.

Missa Mercuria - Missa Mercuria
Don't know too much about this one. Stephan Lill is the guitar player on this track: Earths' Destruction.

Mushroom Giant
Talented trippy local band. Buy their CD! I'll play:
Maypole from Rails, Mary Hell from Mushroom Giant (EP) and More Valium Please from Rails.

Wolf Mail - Solid Ground
Another great Australian blues player. Here's Hold Onto It.

Derrin Nauendorf - Wasteland
Derrin keeps the Australian songwriting torch lit. Strange Feeling's a good track.

Ohm: - Live in KPFK 90.7 FM
Awesome heavy progressive band featuring Chris Poland on guitar. This album was recorded live at a radio station in LA. Peanut Buddha's one of my favourites.

Angie Pepper - Res Ipsa Loquitor
Featuring Deniz Tek on guitar and Angie's unique vocals, this is a great album. Doesn't Seem Right seems about right. Support Australian music!

Gonçarlo Pereira - @g_spot
Mr. Pereira is a talented Portugese player. Another great guitarist that we don't get to hear much of out here. I'll play you Retrosaria Tricot.

Zoot Horn Rollo - We Saw a Bozo Under the Sea
Zoot used to play with Captain Beefheart. Elvis Beans is from his new CD. Enjoy.

Skip Sail - Deal Go Down
Australian bluesman. Skip is the real deal. Buy this CD! I'll play a couple of tracks, Hellhound and Let The Deal Go Down.

Dave Schmeidler - Skyrats Scraps
If you like State of Affairs (and I'm sure you will), you'll like the CD.

Steve Vai - The Elusive Light and Sound Vol. 1
Steve needs no introduction from me. I'll play, by request, the Head-Cuttin' Duel from the movie Crossroads.

Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble - Live at Carnegie Hall
Stevie Ray also needs no intro from me. Here's a live version of Testifyin'. Stevie, we miss you.

Wah Wah Willie - Cinema
Dennis is a great Australian talent. But hey, don't take my word for it, check out Letter From Timor, Test 3, Still Life In Byron and String of Pearls.

Johnny Winter - Captured Live!
Hailed as one of the greatest blues guitarists since the '70s, Johnny's still working. He has a new album coming out soon, but in the meantime here's an oldie, Roll With Me.

Paul Yates - But Of Course
Another great Australian player. Where do we get them all from? I hope you enjoy Hideaway Blues.

ZZ Top - Fandango!
A classic band. Remember Blue Jean Blues?
